Incinerate or dump it overseas: synthetic clothing leaves us with no good options

There's no clear ethical or sustainable option. So what do we do with these items? It's a recurring question, and so far, there haven't been any good choices. The problem has been getting worse over time. The fast-fashion industry pumps out approximately 100 billion clothing items every year — a number that keeps climbing. It gets even worse when we consider what these clothes are made of. Fast-fashion garments rely predominantly on fossil fuels to create their clothing, prioritizing man-made synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon. At this point, experts estimate that 70% of clothing is made with synthetics.   There's no clear way to recycle or reuse polyester and nylon clothing. It can't be composted. It's difficult to turn into rags for cleaning because it's non-absorbent. And when these items are in less-than-perfect conditions, thrift stores and charity shops don't want them. As a result, most of these worn-out clothes are either incinerated — which is as bad for air pollution as coal-burning — or sent off to giant landfills in the Global South. That's people are joining the #TakeItBack movement in the UK, forcing corporations to come face-to-face with the mess they've made. Customers are mailing their used synthetic garments back to the shops that sold the items and asking: "What's your plan to deal with all this waste you created?" Luckily, the EU is set to act on this crisis. It's preparing to implement something called "Extended Producer Responsibility" (EPR) within the next few years, requiring producers to take accountability for their waste. This will put the burden back where it belongs — with the producers who created these items to begin with.   The UK must follow the EU's lead and mandate EPR as well! Her horse was too emaciated to move while she licked its eyeballs

Her horses were so sick, starved, and neglected, one of them died. She Starved Her Horses and Licked Their Eyeballs. Keep Her Away From Animals in the Future. Sign Now    Annisa, A woman in West Palm Beach, Florida is accused of neglecting her horses to the point of death — and of licking a horse's eyeballs. The woman was keeping six horses and one pony at her property, where she was apparently starving them. Authorities who investigated the scene found only small amounts of hay available to the animal, but no real food or water. As a result, all the animals were emaciated and malnourished, filled with worms, and suffering from a variety of medical and dental conditions. Even worse: a licensed veterinarian had previously warned the woman about the sickly horses' conditions. One particular horse was clearly nearing death because of starvation. It had become so ill from malnutrition that it could no longer stand up, could barely breathe, and was in pain from cracked, overgrown hooves. The vet recommended euthanasia to end the animal's irreversible suffering. The woman refused, saying that the animal would be fine: "This horse is living and it will live because I say it will." Then, while the veterinarian was watching, she turned to the horse, opened its eyelids and licked both of its eyeballs. As she did so, she apparently said to the horse: "I know you like this, this is some kind of sex." Sadly, one of her horses did end up dying because of her neglect and mistreatment. Authorities have since rescued all of the remaining, surviving animals. The woman has been arrested and charged with 14 charges that are related to animal cruelty and neglect.   But what happens if she's allowed to get her hands on animals again?
