But recently, Trump-appointed World Bank President David Malpass refused to state plainly that the burning of fossil fuels contributes to climate change, claiming that he is "not a scientist." This is a form of climate denialism, and anyone denying the scientifically proven reality of human-caused climate change is not fit to serve as a leader of one of the most important financial institutions in the world. Carl the coyote was beloved. But officials executed him.

Sign Now      Annisa,   Carl the coyote roamed San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, becoming beloved by local residents. Over the course of 6 years, Carl became familiar with the city and grew to see its many parks as home. After all, there aren't many places in the crowded Bay Area where coyotes like him can live. He was friendly and comfortable being out-and-about in public. But authorities grew wary of Carl. And then, one summer, they shot him dead.   The only thing Carl did "wrong" was adapt to his environment. Humans created a city, and surrounded it with suburbs, and left coyotes like him with nowhere to go. His crime was learning to adjust and get comfortable. After Carl became a new parent, having fathered a litter of his own pups, officials used that to their advantage. One evening, after the botanical gardens near his den had closed and visitors had dispersed, they played a recording that mimicked the sounds of coyote pups crying out in anguish. Carl came to investigate, in case one of the pups was his own. Instead, he met a bullet. Agents shot and killed him on sight.   According to a spokesperson for the San Francisco Animal Care and Control, "It was heartbreaking for everyone involved. No one wanted this to happen." Unfortunately, under California state law, agents are not allowed to relocate coyotes. So even though Carl and his family might have enjoyed a peaceful existence in a more wild, rural area, far away from people, they couldn't get that chance. California authorities must change this law, in order to spare other animals this same cruel fate. In a review of 75 studies published by Dr. Oz at Columbia University, Jezebel discovered the Republican Senate candidate's research "killed over 300 dogs and inflicted significant suffering on them and the other animals used in experiments."   It is clear from his history of misinformation and animal abuse that Dr. Oz is unfit to run for Senate. Sign Now      Annisa,   Exactly two years ago, upwards of 450 pilot whales stranded themselves, dying on the shores of Tasmania, Australia. It was the single largest stranding incident in the region's history. And now, history is repeating itself. Just a few weeks ago, another huge group of pilot whales -- numbering around 230 individuals -- became stranded off the coast of Tasmania again. In distress and agony, they beached themselves, and most died. Luckily, a group of rescuers came together to help the few surviving pilot whales. They managed to bring around 30 animals back into the water, guiding them into deeper waters using local boats. The next step is preventing a future tragedy like this from ever happening again.   The shores of Tasmania are particularly treacherous for pilot whales, with some known to be "whale traps." The shallow slopes along the beaches' ocean floors confuses the whales as they try to echolocate their way around. Once they become disoriented, the panicked animals call out for each other. Friends of friends of friends show up en masse to help the confused pilot whale -- leading to hundreds of animals becoming trapped together. And as climate change wrecks the oceans' ecosystems, wildlife like pilot whales must search further and further for food sources. That means they'll come closer and closer to Tasmanian beaches. So far, though, we aren't sure how to prevent future strandings -- except, of course, by halting and reversing climate change. Brazilian gunmen massacred nearly an entire Indigenous tribe

The man, who was nicknamed the 'Man of the Hole,' survived for decades in isolation, remarkably evading contact and protecting himself from growing threats to tribal lands in the country. With his death comes the total loss of a language and culture. Very little is known about this man or his life, but human rights organizations believe that the rest of his tribe was brutally massacred in attacks by gunmen decades ago. In the 1970s, colonists and ranchers hired gangs of gunmen to literally slaughter the Indigenous people who stood in the way of extraction, ranching, and other forms of Amazon land "development."   Currently, tribes hold a few reserves that the Land Protection Orders has preserved. But Bolsonaro's presidency has been rife with human rights abuses against Indigenous people. In fact, some Indigenous leaders called for courts to try the right-wing president for crimes against humanity. A recent investigation even showed that illegal airstrips are operating throughout the Amazon rainforest, allowing toxic mining to infiltrate dozens of Indigenous territories and one of the most important ecosystems in the world. Clearly, the country needs strong, permanent land preservation to respect tribal sovereignty and Indigenous rights.
