In December, an environmental catastrophe unfolded in the Kerch Strait as two outdated oil tankers broke apart while caught in a storm, spilling thousands of tons of fuel oil into the Black Sea. To make matters worse, the Russian government responded far too late, only mobilizing after a surge of public outrage highlighted the severity of the spill. Even with the government taking action, not enough is being done to mitigate the disaster.
