The process is so grotesque that the UK banned any production of foie gras within its borders back in 2006. But this ban did not affect imports from other countries, like France. In fact, each year, approximately 180 tons of this vile product are imported to the UK from European countries.
After Brexit, multiple government leaders spent years promising to ban the importation of the merciless product. That happened most recently last year, when the Labour Party promised to finally ban these imports if it won the general election. It did win. But now its leaders are refusing to comment on or address their promise to uphold animal welfare.
It is not acceptable for elected leaders to sacrifice animals' welfare to their political ambitions. If they campaigned on protecting animals and won the election, they have a duty to follow through on those promises.
