DID YOU KNOW?   Senator Gaylord Nelson chose April 22 as the designated date for Earth day in order to maximize participation on college campuses for what he conceived as an "environmental teach-in." He determined the week of April 19-25 was the best bet; it did not fall during exams or spring breaks, did not conflict with religious holidays such as Easter or Passover, and was late enough in spring to have decent weather. Big Brazilian Dams Could Wipe Out Communities

action alert! Troops are in Tapajós River communities -- allegedly to pressure people into accepting dam projects that could ruin their homes. Stop Construction of Destructive Brazilian Dams please share it helps!     Dear Annisa, The Brazilian government has big plans for the Tapajós River watershed, including a series of dams on it and its tributaries. But environmental and indigenous rights groups are up in arms because, they claim, officials haven't consulted the communities who live nearby. These dams are part of a massive hydroelectric project and could have devastating effects on the environment and communities on the river. The government knows this, which is why laws are in place to make sure any project of this scale -- with the ability to flood homes and habitat -- gets local permission before moving forward. But reports coming out of the Tapajós communities paint a bleak picture. Some say authorities have used intimidation techniques to pressure communities into signing off on the project, including the deployment of armed troops to the region. We can't let the government walk all over families and communities. Tell YouTube to Save the Slow Loris from Extinction

action alert! The popularity of slow loris videos on YouTube has spawned an illegal trade that is driving the species to the brink of extinction. YouTube needs to remove clips to save these animals from suffering. YouTube Can Save Slow Lorises please share it helps!     Dear Annisa, Search "slow loris" on YouTube and thousands of videos will pop up. These little primates are adorable and some of these videos have millions of views. This all seems harmless, but the slow loris' popularity on YouTube could make them extinct in the wild. The slow loris' cute antics have made it a popular pet, even though trade in the species is illegal. Even worse, it's horribly cruel. The loris bite is toxic, so to render them impotent, traders break off their teeth with pliers. Many die in captivity. Saddest of all, many of the cute and funny behaviors that drive people to get their own loris are driven by fear, stress and anxiety. Thanks to their popularity, lorises are disappearing in the wild. Animal activists have asked YouTube to take down the slow loris videos to help curb the illegal trade in lorises, but so far, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
