Layzej writes "The global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide
[0]jumped by the biggest amount on record in 2010, the U.S. Department of
Energy calculated. A [1]chart accompanying the study shows the breakdown
by country. The new figures mean that [2]levels of greenhouse gases are
higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four
years ago. It is a 'monster' increase that is unheard of, said Gregg
Marland, a professor of geology at Appalachian State University, who has
helped calculate Department of Energy figures in the past. The question
now among scientists is whether the future is the IPCC's worst case
scenario or something more extreme."

jcombel writes with this excerpt: "As the Supreme Court gets ready to
hear oral arguments in a case Tuesday that could [0]determine if
authorities can track U.S. citizens with GPS vehicle trackers without a
warrant, a young man in California has come forward to Wired to reveal
that he [1]found not one but two different devices on his vehicle
recently. The 25-year-old resident of San Jose, California, says he found
the first one about three weeks ago on his Volvo SUV while visiting his
mother in Modesto, about 80 miles northeast of San Jose. After contacting
Wired and allowing a photographer to snap pictures of the device, it was
swapped out and replaced with a second tracking device. A witness also
reported seeing a strange man looking beneath the vehicle of the young
mans girlfriend while her car was parked at work, suggesting that a
tracking device may have been retrieved from her car. Then things got
really weird when police showed up during a Wired interview with the
man."

maccallr writes "The Occupy movement is getting everyone talking about
how to fix the world's economic (and social, environmental, ...)
problems. It is even trialling new forms of 'open' democracy. Trouble is,
it's easy to criticize the physical occupiers for being unrepresentative
of the general population and much of their debating time is spent on
practical rather than policy issues. Well-meaning but naive occupiers
could be susceptible to exploitation by the political establishment and
vested interests. In the UK, [0]virtual occupiers are using Google
Moderator to propose and debate policy in the comfort of their homes
(where, presumably, it is easier to find out stuff you didn't know).
Could something like this be done on a massive scale (national or global)
to reach consensus on what needs to be done? How do you maximize
participation by 'normal folk' on complex issues? What level of
participation could be considered quorate? How do you deal with [1]block
votes? What can we learn from electronic petitions and [2]Iceland's
crowd-sourced constitution? Is the 'Occupy' branding appropriate? What
other pitfalls are there? Or are existing models of democracy and
dictatorship fit for purpose?" One issue I see with a global version of
something like this is all of the people in the world who haven't even

sciencehabit writes with an excerpt from Science: "About 25,000 years
ago, humans began painting a curious creature on the walls of European
caves. Among the rhinos, wild cattle, and other animals, they sketched a
white horse with black spots. Although such horses are popular breeds
today, scientists didn't think they existed before humans domesticated
the species about 5000 years ago. Now, a new [0]study of prehistoric
horse DNA concludes that spotted horses did indeed roam ancient Europe,
suggesting that [1]early artists may have been reproducing what they saw
rather than creating imaginary creatures."

InfiniteZero writes with this quote from MSNBC: "Einstein once said, 'A
person who has not made his great contribution to science before the age
of 30 will never do so.' [0]That peak age has shifted considerably, a new
study found, with 48 being prime time for physicists. ... For instance,
in physics, in the early 20th century, a rise in young scientists
generating prize-winning work coincided with the development of quantum
mechanics. In fact, in 1923, the proportion of physicists who did their
breakthrough work by age 30 peaked at 31 percent. Those who did their
best work by age 40 peaked in 1934 at 78 percent. The proportion of
physics laureates producing Nobel Prize-winning work under age 30 or 40
then declined throughout the rest of the century."

Agit-prop? Absurdist pranksterism? Unsubtly subversive PowerPoint-based
performance art? Yes, Yes, and Yes. Specifically, [0]The Yes Men, whose
brand of straight-faced media manipulation has raised eyebrows at staged
events and on international news, have agreed to answer questions about
their activities. These include social engineering of a certain peculiar
variety ("Impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate
them"), and multi-media lampooning of major corporations and political
bodies and, sometimes, committing the results to film. (Their 2010 film

includes a bonus short, the making of which is the subject of a lawsuit
by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the target of a mock press conference it
