First time accepted submitter Red_Chaos1 was the first to write with news
that, as of around 06:30 UTC, the NYPD appears to have [0]begun removing
the encampment of Occupy Wall Street. At 06:34 UTC the Mayor's office
issued a tweet declaring: "[1]Occupants of Zuccotti should temporarily
leave and remove tents and tarps. Protesters can return after the park is
cleared.". Around 07:15 UTC the first of several large dumpsters were
deposited and the police began throwing tents and other debris into it.
Reports also indicate that a [2]Long Range Acoustic Device is on the
premises. The police are using helicopters and physical barriers to
prevent news coverage, but the Occupiers are [3]streaming the events ([4]alternative
stream; #occupywallstreet on irc.indymedia.org is also rather active for
those who don't fancy flash or twitter.) As of 09:15 or so, the situation
according to those near NYC is that the park has more or less been
cleared.

procuring for her some kind of tablet that would enable her to take notes

carry around a bunch of paper, and could even be used to store
e-textbooks so she doesn't have to lug 30lbs of books around campus. At
minimum, she would have to be able to write freehand on the tablet with a

So far over 4 million people have bought the game, generating over 50

community around the game, developing gems like the [2]Millenaire mod,

voxel based engines, introducing games like [5]Ace of Spades (build, make
tunnels, capture the flag FPS) and [6]Voxatron [note: you might want to

new indie developers, as Minecraft showed development can be funded

[0]harrymcc writes "On November 15th 1971, [1]Intel introduced the 4004
the first single-chip microprocessor. Its offspring, needless to say,
went on to change the world. But first, Intel tried using the 4004 in a
bunch of products that were interesting but often unsuccessful like a
pinball machine, an electronic vote-counting machine, and Wang's first
word processor. Technologizer's Benj Edwards is celebrating the
anniversary with an illustrated look back at this landmark chip." Here's
[2]another nostalgic look back at V3.co.uk, and [3]one at The Inquirer.
And an anonymous reader points out [4]another at ExtremeTech, from which
comes this snippet: "Designed by the fantastically-forenamed Federico
Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stanley Mazor, the 4004 was a 4-bit, 16-pin
microprocessor that operated at a mighty 740KHz and at roughly eight
clock cycles per instruction cycle (fetch, decode, execute), that means
the chip was capable of executing up to 92,600 instructions per second.
We cant find the original list price, but one source indicates that it
cost around $5 to manufacture, or $26 in todays money."

An anonymous reader writes "Yesterday, the [0]final Raspberry Pi printed
circuit board (PCB) layout was revealed. The word 'packed' comes to mind
as this is one very complicated looking board. The reason for that is
just how much Raspberry Pi has strived to save money on the machine by
using complex routing to keep things small and cheap. The Raspberry Pi
team don't believe the design is going to change again unless they missed
something. With that in mind, they revealed the final board is exactly
the same size as a credit card, measuring 85.65 x 53.98mm."

parts of north-eastern Japan [1]exceeds levels considered safe for
farming. The findings provide the first comprehensive estimates of
contamination across Japan following the nuclear accident in 2011. An
international team of researchers took measurements of the radioactive
element caesium-137 in soil and grass from all but one of Japan's 47
regions. The researchers estimate that caesium-137 levels close to the
nuclear plant were eight times the safety limit, while neighbouring
regions were just under this limit."

From reader Leebert comes this notice: NASA will hold a conference this
afternoon to explain the [0]process the agency will use to select the
next class of astronauts. According to the announcement, "NASA will
recruit its next astronaut class through the federal government's
USAJobs.gov website. The class of 2009 was the first astronaut class to
graduate in a new era of space flight following the final mission of the
space shuttle. A new fleet of human spacecraft is in development by
commercial companies to deliver crews to the International Space Station.
NASA also is developing spacecraft to send humans on missions of
exploration far away from our planet." Says Leebert: "I plan to apply,
because I want to be able to say: 'Not everybody can be an astronaut. I
know, they sent me a rejection letter.'"

[0]iONiUM writes "In a somewhat surprising end to [1]the ongoing fight
between large ISPs (a duopoly in Canada), and independent ISPs, the
[2]CRTC has ruled in favor of the small ISPs. This means that independent
ISPs can continue to have unlimited plans offered to customers. From the
article: 'Under the CRTCs new capacity-based approach, large telephone
and cable companies will sell wholesale bandwidth to independent ISPs on
a monthly basis. Independent ISPs will have to determine in advance the
amount they need to serve their retail customers and then manage network
capacity until they are able to purchase more. Alternatively, large
companies can continue to charge independent ISPs a flat monthly fee for
wholesale access, regardless of how much bandwidth their customers use.
Both billing options give independent ISPs the ability to design service
plans and charge their own customers as they see fit.' Score one for the
citizens."

[1]Common Crawl Foundation has a solution for you. It has indexed 5
billion web pages, placed the results on Amazon EC2/S3 and [2]invites you
to make use of it for free. All you have to do is setup your own Amazon
EC2 Hadoop cluster and pay for the time you use it accessing the data
is free. This idea is to open up the whole area of web search to
experiment and innovation. So if you want to challenge Google now you
can't use the excuse that you can't afford it." Their weblog [3]promises
source code for everything eventually. One thing I've always wondered is
why no distributed crawlers or search engines have ever come about.
