An anonymous reader writes "Firefox has gotten so large that it cannot be
compiled with [0]PGO on a 32-bit linker anymore, due to the [1]virtual
memory limitation of 3 GB. This problem had happened last year with 2 GB,
which was worked around by adding a/3GB switch to the Windows build
servers. Now the problem is back, and [2]things aren't quite that simple
anymore." This only affects the [3]inbound branch, but from the looks of
it new code is no longer being accepted until they can trim things from
the build to make it work again. The long term solution is to build the
32-bit binaries on a 64-bit system.

more than 1.7 million units sold in the U.S., but behind closed doors
Microsoft is planning its next move for the successor to the popular
console. Plenty of Xbox 720 rumors have surfaced in recent months, but
veteran games journalist Chris Morris has filtered through them to
provide a realistic take on [0]what Microsoft should and shouldn't do
with Xbox 360's successor. In particular, he notes that Microsoft should
adopt the Blu-ray format from Sony. 'A DVD drive as a medium for storing
larger and larger games is outdated and it steps on the toes of a
system that bills itself as the high definition leader,' Morris writes.
'Microsoft resisted the move to Blu-ray this generation without any ill
effects. It even survived picking the losing side in the format battle
between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but it can't rely on the DVD to take it into
the next generation.'"

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "Time's editor Rick Stengel announced on The Today
Show that [1]'The Protester' is Time Magazine's Person of the Year: From
the Arab Spring to Athens, [2]from Occupy Wall Street to Moscow. 'For
capturing and highlighting a global sense of restless promise, for
upending governments and conventional wisdom, for combining the oldest of
techniques with the newest of technologies to shine a light on human
dignity and, finally, for steering the planet on a more democratic though
sometimes more dangerous path for the 21st century.' The initial gut
reaction on Twitter seems to be one of derision, as Time has gone with a
faceless human mass instead of [3]picking a single person like Tunisian
fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi who Time mentions in the story and is
widely acknowledged as the person who set off the 'Arab Spring.' [4]In
2006, Time chose "You" with a mirrored cover to much disappointment,
picked the personal computer as 'Machine of the Year' and [5]Earth as
'Planet of the Year,' proving 'that it should probably just be "Story of
the Year" if they aren't going to acknowledge an actual person,' writes
Dashiell Bennett. 'By not picking any one individual, they've basically
chosen no one.'"

DemonGenius writes "I'm in the midst of a major rollout of one of our
primary internal applications at work and we have a beta version
available for all the staff to use. The problem here is most of the staff
don't know how to send reports meaningful enough to get us devs started
on solving their problems without constant back and forth correspondence
that wastes both developer time and theirs. Some common examples are:
screenshots of the YSOD that don't include the page URL, scaled
screenshots that are unreadable, the complaint that wants to be a bug
report but is still just a complaint, etc. From the user's perspective,
they just send an email, but that email registers in our tracking system.
Any thoughts on how to get the non-devs sending us descriptive and/or
meaningful reports? Does anyone here have an efficient and user-friendly
bug tracking system/policy/standard at their workplace? How does it
work?"

to [1]check IP addresses belonging to major companies in the
entertainment industry and published lists of pirated files from several,

information to make a slightly different point than the industry usually
does: "By highlighting the above our intention is not to get anyone into

consisting of Super Meat Boy, Shank, Jamestown, Bit.Trip Runner, and
NightSky. Also, if you beat the average price, you receive Cave Story+
and Gratuitous Space Battles. As always, the games are DRM-free, and this
is the initial Linux release for all seven. I'm also curious to see what
will be added later on, as has been the tradition of the Humble Bundles."

[0]destinyland writes "Amazon's released their [1]list of 2011's
best-selling books, revealing that 40% of the best-selling ebooks didn't
even make it onto their list of the best-selling print books. The #1 and
#2 best-selling ebooks of the year [2]weren't even available in print
editions, while four of the top 10 best-selling print books didn't make
it into the top 100 best-selling ebooks. 'It couldn't be more clear that
Kindle owners are choosing their material from an entirely different
universe of books,' notes one Kindle site, which points out that five of
the best-selling ebooks came from two million-selling ebook authors
Amanda Hocking and John Locke who are still awaiting the release of
their books in print. And five of Amazon's [3]best-selling ebooks were
Kindle-only "Singles,' including a Stephen King short story which
actually outsold another King novel that he'd released in both ebook and
print formats. And Neal Stephenson's 'Reamde' was Amazon's #99
best-selling print book of 2011, though it didn't even make it onto their
list of the 100 best-selling ebooks of the year. 'People who own Kindles
are just reading different books than the people who buy printed books,'
reports the Kindle site, which adds '2011 may be remembered as the year
that hundreds of new voices finally found their audiences.'"

Vehicle from a Human Driven Mode to an Autonomously Driven Mode. From the

embodiment, the vehicle may have an instruction to drive to the Cloud

instruction may then direct the vehicle to drive to the Crown Fountain at

another predetermined amount of time. Finally, the vehicle instruction
may tell the vehicle to return to its starting position.'"

First time submitter StatureOfLiberty writes "The [0]California Near
Space Project launched a high altitude weather balloon from San Jose,
California 4:00 PM local time Sunday afternoon (Dec 11). Over the past 3
days it [1]managed to cross the United States and then the Atlantic
Ocean. The balloon passed the coastline of Spain about 12:40 AM (US
Eastern Standard Time) Wednesday morning (Dec 14). It has since popped
and landed in the Mediterranean Sea. This is a huge accomplishment. The
[2]previous distance record was about 3,300 miles. This one traveled
about 6,200 miles. Enthusiasts tracked the balloon via the web throughout
most of the trip thanks to a ham radio technology called [3]APRS which
received data transmitted by the balloon and [4]logged it to databases on
the internet. Thanks to APRS stations around the world (some of whom
changed their normal listening frequencies to help with the tracking
process) data was available for most of the flight."
