Hoarding in EU, FUD in U.S. Over Light Bulb Ban
The European Union's Sept. 1 deadline on incandescent light bulbs sparked hoarding. And while the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007, which began the 100w bulb ban this year in the U.S., is not technically a ban, there is still plenty of fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
Scheduled to be released next month, Ubuntu 12.10 now includes both Amazon ads in the user's dash and by default an Amazon store in the user's launcher. The reason for these "features"? Affiliate revenue. But some say the Amazon integration is unobtrusive and that objections to its inclusion in the OS should be ignored.

Professor of sustainable chemistry at Imperial College, London Tom Welton says he believes that a global shortage of helium--which is used to cool the large magnets inside MRI scanners--means it should be used more carefully. He adds that filling balloons is "absolutely the wrong use of helium."

America ranks 29th in the world for Internet speed and users pay up to 4 times more for service than users in other countries, according to author David Cay Johnston. The main reason? Regulatory capture. It seems the telecommunication companies have rewritten the regulatory rules in their favor, he says.
