How to Handle Advised BIOS Upgrade Failure
Bomarc was advised twice to "flash the BIOS to the latest"--once by a (major) hard drive controller maker (RAID) and once by an OEM. Both times, the update bricked an expensive piece of equipment. And both times, the response after the failed flash was "It's not our problem, it's out of warranty." Have other Slashdotters experienced this and what should be done about it?

When 1 GB Really Isn't 1 GB
When it comes to RAM, as every geek knows, 1 GB does not mean 1 billion bytes; it means 2**30 (1,073,741,824) bytes. TechCrunch is one of the many outlets to report that Microsoft's Surface Pro tablet computer sold out on its first day of wide availability. Is programming just one of those things that requires complete dedication, or what?"

Open-Source Software and 'The Luxury of Ignorance'
Nine years ago, Eric Raymond drew from his experience of trying to configure CUPS on his home network to write a screed on poor design of user interfaces in general, and configuration interfaces in particular, in open-source software.

New Low-Cost, High-Res 3D Printer Like No Other
A new offering in the world of low-cost desktop 3D printers that uses a process called Stereolithography instead of the standard FDM (fused deposition modeling) will likely shake things up. Stereolithography can get to much higher resolutions and seems to make structures that are stronger and can be machined more accurately than those made by the FDM process. Formlabs co-founder Max Lobovsky explains.
