action alert! Hundreds of thousands of tiny birds are killed as they migrate through Cyprus every year. These songbirds don't deserve to become a luxury dish! Ask Cyprus to End Songbird Slaughter! please share it helps!     Dear Annisa, Hundreds of thousands of tiny songbirds are slaughtered as they migrate through Cyprus each year. But the nets trappers use don't just kill blackcaps, which will be killed for restaurant delicacies. They also kill dozens of species of endangered birds. Trappers use completely unselective methods, including mist nets, which trap every flying animal that goes past. Although blackcaps are the main target, over 150 different bird species are caught, of which about 80 are endangered. Species trapped include robins, shrikes and the colorful bee eaters in the picture at the top of this email. Can you imagine wanting to kill and eat one of those little guys? Songbirds already face a multitude of problems, ranging from habitat destruction to their populations being ravaged by domestic and feral cats. A luxury dish isn't worth further sending endangered species into decline. Ask the Cyprus government to get serious about stopping the slaughter today. Thank you for taking action, Kathleen J. action alert! In just the last two months, 13 endangered rhinos have been brutally murdered by armed poachers around the Kaziranga National Park in India. Tell the Indian Government to Protect Endangered Rhinos! please share it helps!     Dear Annisa, Gangs of armed poachers have begun to make hunting endangered rhinos a bloodsport. Recently, around Kaziranga National Park, park rangers spent several hours fighting off a gang of poachers trying to kill a rhinoceros. Short-staffed and under-equipped, park rangers were unable to protect the rhinoceros from being hunted down. Only twenty years ago, one-horned rhinoceros were on the brink of extinction. Now, more than two-thirds of the global population of the rhino live in the Kaziranga National Park. The recent surge of poaching has dramatically demonstrated that Indian park rangers are not equipped to effectively protect the gentle giants. Without adequate protection from the Indian government soon, many believe that the rhino will once again be on the path towards extinction. Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of India's Environment and Forests, must step in and heighten the security around Kaziranga National Park. Polar Bears Continue to be Protected under Endangered Species Act Despite protests from Alaska, polar bears will keep their "threatened" status and continue to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. The bears face a number of threats ranging from the loss of sea ice (which they rely on for survival) to disease, pollution, shipping and hunting. Read more. Wind Farm Built in Scotland Despite Trump Temper Tantrum In typical Trump fashion, the Donald threw a fit when he found out about plans to build an offshore wind farm that might block the view from one of his golf course projects. Luckily, the Scottish government ignored him and approved the project. Read more. EU Bans Cosmetics Tested on Animals More than twenty years of campaigning finally resulted in an EU ban on cosmetic animal testing. No one selling cosmetic products in the EU will be allowed to test finished products or their ingredients on animals anywhere in the world, a comprehensive rule that closes loopholes companies have previously used to continue animal testing. Read more. Public Lands Safe from Oil and Gas Drilling Several energy companies requested oil and gas leases for public lands in Utah and Wyoming, assuming they would no doubt be approved. Sharks and Manta Rays Protected Under CITES Manta rays and five special shark species will be banned from international trade thanks to the votes of delegates to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). action alert! Citizens in Cameroon can be jailed for five years for the mere rumor that they're LGBT. The international community can't stand for this human rights violation any longer. Cameroon: Being LGBT Isn't a Jailable Offense please share it helps!     Dear Annisa, Cameroon may be the worst place on earth to be LGBT. The country has some of the harshest punishments for the mildest of "transgressions." Sometimes, the mere rumor that someone is queer can land a person in jail. Tell Cameroon to stop harassing its LGBT community. In the last three years, 28 people have been prosecuted for same-sex relations. In any rational court, these cases would be thrown out. Most lack evidence of witnesses. In fact, authorities often torture suspects to elicit forced confessions. Those convicted spend up to five years in prison. No one should be punished for who they are. It's time that the international community took a stand for LGBT citizens in Cameroon and demanded fair treatment from their government.
