Polar Bears Continue to be Protected under Endangered Species Act Despite protests from Alaska, polar bears will keep their "threatened" status and continue to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. The bears face a number of threats ranging from the loss of sea ice (which they rely on for survival) to disease, pollution, shipping and hunting. Read more. | Wind Farm Built in Scotland Despite Trump Temper Tantrum In typical Trump fashion, the Donald threw a fit when he found out about plans to build an offshore wind farm that might block the view from one of his golf course projects. Luckily, the Scottish government ignored him and approved the project. Read more. | EU Bans Cosmetics Tested on Animals More than twenty years of campaigning finally resulted in an EU ban on cosmetic animal testing. No one selling cosmetic products in the EU will be allowed to test finished products or their ingredients on animals anywhere in the world, a comprehensive rule that closes loopholes companies have previously used to continue animal testing. Read more. | Public Lands Safe from Oil and Gas Drilling Several energy companies requested oil and gas leases for public lands in Utah and Wyoming, assuming they would no doubt be approved. Instead, a federal district court declined to issue the permits, citing lack of compliance with laws protecting the land and animals in surrounding areas. Read more. | Sharks and Manta Rays Protected Under CITES Manta rays and five special shark species will be banned from international trade thanks to the votes of delegates to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Sharks have been heavily targeted for their fins and mantas for their gill rakers, despite their proven value to ocean ecosystem health.
