Venezuela's new president has already denied citizens' right to assemble and forced news outlets to air favorable footage. Demand he strengthen, not destroy free speech rights.
Dear Annisa,
After Nicolas Maduro narrowly won the presidency of Venezuela the country erupted in protest. Maduro's opponent challenged the results, but a recount was denied by the National Electoral Council.
Now Maduro is making good on his promise to respond with an "iron fist." He's using his power to shut down free speech among the people and the press.
Maduro denied supporters of his opposition the right to hold a rally and forced news outlets to air footage of him opening new hospitals. Still, people around the country have continued their protests, some of which have become violent.
Maduro may not like what his detractors have to say about him, but he has no right to prevent them from speaking out. Real leaders work with their people to improve the country; they don't oppress them to elevate their own sense of power.
Demand Maduro's new government stop censoring citizens and journalists and allow an open dialogue in his country.
