Thailand, use of Twitter, Facebook, and other social media are [0]banned
for campaigning and other election related purposes. Offenders face a
maximum six months in prison and a 10,000 baht ($330) fine. The ban
includes sending short telephone texts and forwarding emails. 'There will
be a unit of more than 100 officers to monitor this,' said police
spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri of the social media ban. 'If we can track
the origin of (an online message) right away, we will block the site and
make an arrest. But if the sites are registered overseas and we can't
check the origin, we'll first block it and ask the IP (Internet Protocol)

An anonymous reader writes "Apple [0]released to developers the 'gold
master' version of Mac OS 10.7, known as Lion, in a move [1]that
positions the company for a July roll-out. 'With Snow Leopard, Apple's
previous Mac OS release, the time between going from gold master status
to hitting store shelves was approximately two weeks. However that
release required Apple to stamp and produce boxed discs to send out to
retail stores. Lion will be the first by Apple to be released only
through its Mac App Store as a digital download.'"

theodp writes "Stephen Few [0]never did suffer data visualization fools
gladly. After seeing an oil exec (mis)use data viz to put a positive spin
on Gulf Oil Spill cleanup efforts, Few felt compelled to [1]call out BP.
And now [2]it's General Electric that's got Few's dander up: 'The series
of interactive data visualizations that have appeared on GE's website
over the last two years,' writes Few, 'has provided a growing pool of
silly examples. They attempt to give the superficial impression that GE
cares about data while in fact providing almost useless content. They
look fun, but communicate little. As such, they suggest that GE does not
in fact care about the information and has little respect for the
intelligence and interests of its audience. This is a shame, because the
stories contained in these data sets are important.' Concerned about his
strong reactions to poorly designed data visualizations, Few asked his
neuropsychologist wife whether he might be overreacting. She, too, agrees
that [3]GE's natural gas visualizations are maddening, which one might be
tempted to dismiss as predictable, although Eyeo Festival presenter
Michal Migurski also declares GE's effort '[4]one terrible, terrible bit
of nonsense.'"

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden says that
the future is bright and promises that one day humans will land on Mars.
'[1]American leadership in space will continue for at least the next
half-century because we've laid the foundation for success,' the nation's
space chief said in a speech at the National Press Club. 'When I hear
people say that the final shuttle flight marks the end of U.S. human
space flight, you all must be living on another planet. We are not ending
human space flight. We are recommitting ourselves to it.' Bolden says
within a year private companies can take over the process of sending
cargo shipments into orbit and by 2015 industry can take over astronaut
transport, freeing NASA to focus on the long-term goals of reaching
beyond Earth's shadow. 'Do we want to keep repeating ourselves or do we
want to look at the big horizon?' says Bolden. 'My generation touched the
moon today, NASA, and the nation, wants to touch an asteroid, and
eventually send a human to Mars.' A group of former astronauts and other
critics have blasted the agency and the Obama administration for ending
the 30-year-old shuttle program, once the cornerstone of NASA. 'NASA's
human spaceflight program is in substantial disarray with no clear-cut
mission in the offing. We will have no rockets to carry humans to
low-Earth orbit and beyond for an indeterminate number of years,' write
Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan. 'After a half-century of
remarkable progress, [2]a coherent plan for maintaining America's
leadership in space exploration is no longer apparent.'"
