Almaden, California, has developed hardware and software technologies
that will allow it to [1]strap together 200,000 hard drives to create a
single storage cluster of 120 petabytes 120 million gigabytes. The data
repository, which currently has no name, is being developed for an
unnamed customer, but with a capacity of 120PB, it's most likely use will
be a storage device for a governmental (or Facebook) supercomputer. With
IBM's GPFS (General Parallel File System), over 30,000 files can be
created per second and with massive parallelism, and no doubt [2]thanks
to the 200,000 individual drives in the array, single files can be read

An anonymous reader writes "Marcia Hofmann, senior staff attorney at the
EFF, gives [0]more information on the first known seizure of equipment in
the U.S. due to a warrant executed against a private individual running a
Tor exit node. 'This spring, agents from Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) executed a search warrant at the home of Nolan King and
seized six computer hard drives in connection with a criminal
investigation. The warrant was issued on the basis of an Internet
Protocol (IP) address that traced back to an account connected to Mr.
King's home, where he was operating a Tor exit relay.' The EFF was able
to get Mr King's equipment returned, and Marcia points out that 'While we
think it's important to let the public know about this unfortunate event,
it doesn't change our belief that running a Tor exit relay is legal.' She
also links to the [1]EFF's Tor Legal FAQ. This brings up an interesting
dichotomy in my mind, concerning protecting yourself from the Big digital
Brother: Running an open Wi-Fi hotspot, or Tor exit node, would make you
both more likely to be investigated, and less likely to be convicted, of
any cyber crimes."

In his first accepted submission, Anon8---) writes "As published on
nature.com, a process called [0]electrowetting, 'in which a conductive
liquid droplet, placed on an electrode, is physically deformed by an
applied electric charge,' could be used to [1]provide 10 watts of juice
to smartphones and other gadgets as you walk. 'The technique depends on
the use of a dielectric material which is usually an insulator but that
can be polarized in an electric field to coat the electrode. When the
dielectric is charged the droplet can wet the surface more easily, and
deforms. In his system, Krupenkin runs this process backwards, using the
changing physical form of liquid drops between dielectric-coated plates
to [2]generate charge and therefore electrical power.' So far, Krupenkin
and Ashley Taylor have been able to produce a few milliwatts of power
along tiny channels a few millimeters wide. They have patented the idea
and are now concentrating on scaling up the device and designing a shoe
to contain it."

and the keys can show unique icons particular to the game you're playing.
The requisite hardware for a gaming laptop makes it weigh almost seven

the price at $2,800, they price a lot of gamers right out of the
market. As the article says, 'It's a gamble, but an exciting one.'"

Layzej writes with this quote from Nature: "For a century, scientists
have known that charged particles from space constantly bombard Earth.
Known as cosmic rays, the particles are mostly protons blasted out of
supernovae. As the protons crash through the planet's atmosphere, they
can ionize volatile compounds, causing them to condense into airborne
droplets, or aerosols. It is hypothesized that [0]clouds might then build
up around the droplets possibly affecting the Earth's climate. To find
out, [Jasper] Kirkby and his team are bringing the atmosphere down to
Earth in an experiment called Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets (CLOUD).
... Early results seem to indicate that cosmic rays do cause a change ([1]abstract).
The high-energy protons seemed to enhance the production of
nanometer-sized particles from the gaseous atmosphere by more than a
factor of ten. But, Kirkby adds, those particles are far too small to
serve as seeds for clouds."

[0]RogueyWon writes "Eurogamer reports some encouraging news for
console-bound fans of online shooters. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,
the new stand-alone version of the wildly successful Half-Life mod
recently announced by Valve, will [1]support mouse and keyboard controls
on the PlayStation 3. This isn't entirely unprecedented; 2007's [2]
Unreal Tournament 3 had a similar feature, but the idea has never gained
momentum. If the idea of allowing PC-style controls on a console does
catch on, could this help remove some of the stigma associated with
first-person shooters on consoles?" Players of the Xbox 360 version will
still be required to use controllers, and they won't be able to
participate in cross-platform play. Valve boss Gabe Newell has [3]had a
hard time convincing Microsoft to open up Xbox Live enough to integrate
services like Steamworks.

[0]mike_cardwell sends in a detailed writeup of how he went about
[1]protecting a Ubuntu laptop from attacks of varying levels of
sophistication, covering disk encryption, defense against cold boot
attacks, and even simple smash-and-grabs. (He also acknowledges that no
defense is perfect, and the [2]xkcd password extraction tool would still
work.) Quoting: "An attacker with access to the online machine could
simply hard reboot the machine from a USB stick or CD containing msramdmp
to grab a copy of the RAM. You could password protect the BIOS and
disable booting from anything other than the hard drive, but that still
doesn't protect you. An attacker could cool the RAM, remove it from the
running machine, place it in a second machine and boot from that instead.
The first defense I used against this attack is procedure based. I shut
down the machine when it's not in use. My old Macbook was hardly ever
shut down, and lived in suspend to RAM mode when not in use. The second
defense I used is far more interesting. I use something called TRESOR.
TRESOR is an implementation of AES as a cipher kernel module which stores
the keys in the CPU debug registers, and which handles all of the crypto
operations directly on the CPU, in a way which prevents the key from ever
entering RAM. The laptop I purchased works perfectly with TRESOR as it
contains a Core i5 processor which has the AES-NI instruction set."

| Coordinated, Global ATM Heist Nets $13 Million

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An anonymous reader writes "An international cybercrime gang stole $13
million from a Florida-based financial institution earlier this year, by
executing a highly-coordinated heist in which thieves [0]used ATMs around
the globe to cash out stolen prepaid debit cards. 'Prepaid cards usually
limit the amounts that cardholders can withdraw from a cash machine
within a 24 hour period. Apparently, the crooks were able to drastically
increase or eliminate the withdrawal limits for 22 prepaid cards that
they had obtained. The fraudsters then cloned the prepaid cards, and
distributed them to co-conspirators in several major cities across
Europe, Russia and Ukraine.' The attack is eerily similar to [1]the 2008
attack on RBS WorldPay that stole $9.4M. The men who pleaded guilty to
the RBS attack were arrested and charged in Russia, but were later given
only probation."

Hitting the front page for the first time, earlytime writes "VMware
[0]released vSphere 5 yesterday. After much publicity about its [1]new
licensing scheme, techies worldwide get to take the new release for a
spin and see if all of the new features are worth the fuss. From the
article: 'VMware vSphere 5 supports virtual machines (VMs) that are up to
four times more powerful than previous versions VMs can now be
configured with up to 1 terabyte of memory and 32 virtual CPUs ... VMware
vSphere 5 also introduces three key new flagship features Auto-Deploy,
Profile-Driven Storage and Storage DRS that extend the platform's
unique datacenter resource management capabilities, delivering
intelligent policy management to support an automated "set it and forget
it" approach to managing datacenter resources, including server
deployment and storage management. Customers can define policies and
establish the operating parameters, and VMware vSphere 5 does the rest.'"

I've seen. My guess is that it is probably coming from the broken riser

[0]brothke writes "During the 1990's when Kevin Mitnick was on the run, a
cadre of people were employed to find him and track him down. Anyone who
could have an angle on Mitnick was sought after by the media to provide a
sound bite on the world's most dangerous computer hacker. Just one
example is [1]John Markoff, who became a star journalist for his work at
The New York Times, and a follow-up book and series of articles based on
Mitnick. In Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the Worlds Most Wanted
Hacker, the first personal account of what really happened; Mitnick says
most of the stories around him were the result of the myth of Kevin
Mitnick, and nothing more. In the book, he attempts to dispel these myths
and set the record straight." Read below for the rest of Ben's review.

[0]Mark.JUK writes "Scientists working at New York's [1]Institute of
Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers have discovered a [2]new way of mapping
the multiple higher channels / more complex light in an optical fibre,
which could allow telecommunications operators the ability to harness
'untapped data channels' and thus improve broadband speeds and internet
capacity across the world. Critically, the new model allows scientists to
follow polarization and other changes as light travels, which also gives
you an insight into the material that it travels through. Until recently
it wasn't possible to map such light, but all that has changed thanks to
the globe-shaped Higher Order Poincare Sphere model."

Harperdog writes "This article details [0]how GPS can help detect secret
nuclear tests, giving the US more reason to ratify the Comprehensive Test
Ban Treaty. Here's a quote about the 2009 [1]North Korea test: 'At the
time, however, the May 25 bomb also sent a different signature, this one
into the atmosphere. It did not release radioactive gas or dust, as would
be the case for a bomb detonated on the Earth's surface. Rather, it
released a shockwave a bubble of disturbed air that spread out from the
test site across the planet and high into the ionosphere. ... We quickly
gathered data from 11 GPS receivers six belonging to the South Korean
GPS network and five belonging to the International GNSS Service and
scattered around Eastern Asia. The data indicated a sudden spike in
atmospheric electron density just after the underground test.'"
