by the TSA in Tennessee for refusing a pat-down. Apparently an anomaly
appeared when he received the full body scan. While he offered to undergo
the body scan once more, he was informed that only a pat-down would be
sufficient to clear him. He has since been detained and the story is
developing."

Last week Timothy Lord [0]looked at the Tesla Model S. He also took a
quick look at the [1]CODA electric car. Like Tesla, CODA is based in
California. Like Tesla, CODA is building purely electric, "plug-in" cars.
But unlike Tesla, CODA is making a bland but practical sedan that can go
up to 150 miles on a charge and costs about $37,000. That's not exactly a
Kia-competitive price, even though Tim says it looks kind of like a Kia.
But it's 100% electric and costs less than a Tesla -- really, hardly more
than a [2]Nissan Leaf. And it has a fully-usable back seat and a
decent-sized trunk. And unlike the Nissan Leaf, it's made right here in
the good old USA.

have forced it down is erroneous. The drone didn't come down and land
gently as Iran had suggested it did. At least Iran got a good photo op,

product design this week that it claims can deliver enormous performance
benefits by combining CPU and DRAM on to a single piece of silicon.
[1]Venray's TOMI (Thread Optimized Multiprocessor) attempts to redefine
the problem by building a very different type of microprocessor. The TOMI
Borealis is built using the same transistor structures as conventional
DRAM; the chip trades clock speed and performance for ultra-low low
leakage. Its design is, by necessity, extremely simple. Not counting the
cache, TOMI is a 22,000 transistor design. Instead of surrounding a CPU
core with L2 and L3 cache, Venray inserted a CPU core directly into a
DRAM design. A TOMI Borealis core connects eight TOMI cores to a 1Gbit
DRAM with a total of 16 ICs per 2GB DIMM. This works out to a total of
128 processor cores per DIMM. That said, when your CPU has fewer
transistors than an architecture that debuted in 1986, there is a good
chance that you left a few things out--like an FPU, branch prediction,
pipelining, or any form of speculative execution. Venray may have created
a chip with power consumption an order of magnitude lower than anything
ARM builds and more memory bandwidth than Intel's highest-end Xeons, but
it's an ultra-specialized, ultra-lightweight core that trades 25 years of
flexibility and performance for scads of memory bandwidth."

is used by millimeter wave scanners in airports, medical imaging, and

atoms and molecules have a unique terahertz-range signature, T-ray

of these antennae, it's possible to create huge antennae arrays on a
single silicon chip, meaning [1]hand-held T-ray scanners are now a
possibility. In the not so distant future, every household might have a

Project, a crowd-sourced effort to re-create the entirety of Episode IV
as series of 15-second clips filmed and submitted by fans. Well, it's
done at last, and CmdrTaco has [1]written his review of the two-hour film.
He says, 'A great number of shots demonstrate technology well beyond what
was available when the original Star Wars was made. Other shots are
stylishly animated in CG. Others are rotoscoped in mediums from chalk to
pencil to marker. There���s also a plethora of stop motion, claymation, and
even some puppetry to go around. [A] few shots are only slightly modified
from the originals, but those are the rarity, and generally done to pull
off a specific joke. ... It's a glorious achievement.'"

create a base on the Moon. They're looking to create either a facility on
the Moon itself or a permanent space station in orbit around the moon.
'We don't want man to just step on the Moon,' agency chief Vladimir
Popovkin said in an interview with Vesti FM radio station. 'Today, [1]we
know enough about it. We know that there is water in its polar areas,' he
added. 'We are now discussing how to begin [the Moon's] exploration with
NASA and the European Space Agency.'"

position to start [1]Udacity ��� an online educational venture. Udacity's
first two free courses are Building a Search Engine and Programming a
Robotic Car. In a moving speech at the Digital Life Design conference, he
explained that after presenting the online AI course to thousands of
students [2]he could no longer teach at Stanford: 'Now that I saw the
true power of education, there is no turning back. It's like a drug. I
won't be able to teach 200 students again, in a conventional classroom
setting.' Let's hope Udacity works out; Stanford is a tough act to
follow."
