An estimated one million dogs are being bred for human consumption in South Korea per year. Breeding dogs for meat and selling dog meat have been illegal since 1984, but the government has been lax on enforcing laws regarding dog meat production. Now, groups in Korea are aggressively pushing for the legalization of the meat.
Unfortunately, dogs bred for human consumption in Korea are subjected to cruelty that is unacceptable for any animal.
Dogs are tightly packed in small cages, pressed up against each other. Slaughterhouses typically kill the dogs through electrocution, but smaller markets club the animal before boiling it -- sometimes while they are still alive. The traditional method is to hang dogs by the neck before beating them, as this practices release stress hormones that are thought to improve the meat's flavor and make it healthier.
Dogs are social, intelligent animals that do not deserve to be treated in this way. Legalizing their meat in Korea will only increase these horrifying, inhumane practices. Sign the petition to keep dog meat illegal in Korea!
