of 12 honorary degrees, a CBE and in 2009 awarded the Presidential Medal
of Freedom, is an extraordinary man ��� but what is perhaps most
extraordinary about Hawking is [1]how he has defied and baffled medical
experts who predicted he had just months to live in 1963, when he was
diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a [2]disease that only 5%
survive for more than a decade after diagnosis. Hawking started having
symptoms shortly before his 21st birthday. At first they were mild ��� a
bit of clumsiness and few unexplained stumbles and falls but,
predictably, by the very nature of the disease, his incurable condition

should change the situation by voting in better officials. An opinion
that appears in nearly every political thread is: 'we're to blame because
we elected these people.' On the eve of the first primary (in New
Hampshire), I have to wonder: how can we tell the candidates apart? Ron
Paul is an obvious exception, and I am not discounting him, but otherwise
it seems that no candidate has made a stand on any issue. Consider the
candidates (all of them, of any party) as a set. What issue can I use to
divide them into two groups, such that one group is 'for' something and
the other is 'against'?"

[0]preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, following a long struggle
to maintain any sort of viable business. The announcement has prompted
some commentators to claim that Kodak's near-demise has been brought on
by: a failure to innovate, or a failure to anticipate the shift from
analogue to digital cameras, or a failure to compete with the rise of
cameras in mobile phones. Actually, [1]none of these claims are true.
Where Kodak did fail is in not understanding what people take photographs
for, and what they do with photos once they have taken them." Continues
the reader: "Looking at camera data from Flickr, of images uploaded in
2011, camera phones only make up 3% of the total. Dedicated cameras from
Canon, Nikon and yes, Kodak were used to take 97% of the images. What
Kodak failed to understand is that people have switched from taking

communications satellite [0]underscores some of the weaknesses in U.S.
space efforts. Quoting: 'The seven-ton ���AEHF-1,��� part of a planned
six-satellite constellation meant to support radio communication between
far-flung U.S. military units, [1]had been in orbit just one day when the
problems began. The satellite started out in a highly-elliptical,
temporary orbit. The plan was to use the spacecraft���s on-board engine to
boost it to a permanent, geo-stationary orbit. But when the Air Force
space operators at Los Angeles Air Force Base activated the engine,
nothing happened. The Government Accountability Office would later blame
the failure on a rag left inside a fuel line by a Lockheed worker.'"

calculates that the atmospheric concentration of CO2 would have to fall
below about 240 parts per million (ppm) before the glaciation could
begin. The current level is around 390ppm. Other research groups have

in the oceans potentially to cause significant melting of polar ice and

TV maker [0]Vizio is famous for undercutting competitors' prices on LCD
TVs; now, the company has released word that it will introduce a [1]new
line of budget computers, and next week will be showing them off at CES.
Bloomberg reports that the company won't yet disclose actual prices (the
kind with numbers), but says instead only that they will be at a "price
that just doesn���t seem possible." As the article mentions, the all-in-one
desktop machines shown look a lot like Apple products; [2]BetaNews has
pictures, and ominously mentions Apple's tendency to sue over
similar-looking products.

study started, watched participants over a 10 year period. Disturbingly

of Earth and Mars, the pioneering astronauts who touch down on the
Martian surface will have to remain there for a year and a half. For this

the long-term exploration of Mars. Last year, students at the University
of Wisconsin won the XHab competition to [1]design and build an
inflatable loft addition to a habitat shell that NASA had already
constructed. The final structure now [2]serves as a working model that is
being tested in the Arizona desert. Like any home, it's a sacred bulwark

anti-competition probers were looking into whether Google's Android

for the Raspberry Pi. Quoting: "In the middle of December last year the
Raspberry Pi Foundation made a surprising announcement that not only
would we see the $25 PC released in 2012, it would also be getting an
[0]expansion board ... called the Gertboard, and is being developed by
Broadcom employee Gert van Loo in his spare time. When completed, it will
allow Raspberry Pi owners to [1]play around with flashing LEDs, electric
motors, and a range of different sensors. It effectively takes the $25
Raspberry Pi beyond just being a very cheap PC. There's a video of the
Gertboard already working which [2]demonstrates the 12 LEDs being lit up
and the board powering an electric motor more than capable of lifting
something like your garage door."

Apotekaren writes "The Finnish ISP [0]Elisa has been forced to block
several domains leading to the infamous torrent-tracker site The Pirate
Bay following a [1]court case initiated by IFPI Finland... The Helsinki
District Court ruled in favor of IFPI Finland in October, but the [2]ISP
resisted implementing the block until today because of the [3]terms of
the block not being specific enough. The ISP is calling the block
'temporary' and is appealing the court decision." Analysis from Torrent
Freak shows that the [4]block is probably easily circumvented.

for web applications, has [1]issued a DMCA takedown notice against the
[2]OpenDDR project on Github. ScientiaMobile claims that OpenDDR is

licensed under a liberal license. Newer versions of the device database
are licensed under restrictive licenses which do not allow any
modification or redistribution."

Electronic Privacy Information Center is unhappy with the way Facebook
launched its new [0]Timeline profile. Last month, the privacy
organization complained [1]Facebook went too far because it started
rolling out the redesign without asking users first. EPIC then followed
up with a ([2]four-page letter (PDF) to the Federal Trade Commission
asking it to investigate the new feature to insure that it meets with the
terms of a November 29th [3]FTC-Facebook settlement. Facebook denies
these claims, saying that the [4] Timeline launch has nothing to do with
its users' privacy."

process by which evolution added a component to a cellular machine. ...
In a paper published in Nature, researchers [1]recreated an 'ancestral'
version of a cellular machine called the [2]V-ATPase proton pump, which
channels protons across membranes and is vital for keeping cell
compartments at the right acidity. Part of this machine is a ring of six
proteins that threads through the membrane. Animals and most other
eukaryotes have a ring composed of two types of protein component; fungi
are alone in having a ring with three. The [3]researchers used
computational methods to work backwards and find the most likely
sequences of these proteins hundreds of millions of years ago. The team
inserted the DNA into yeast and found that just two mutations can turn

of a planet orbiting another star, exoplanetary scientist Fr��d��ric Pont
[1]created a lovely image of what sunset would look like from HD209458b,
nicknamed Osiris, a planet 150 light years away. The Hubble data [2]gave
information on the atmospheric absorption of this hot Jupiter planet,
and, coupled with models of how the atmosphere was layered, Pont was able
to create a realistic looking sunset on the planet. The big surprise: the
star looks green as it sets! Sodium absorption sucks out the red colors
and blue is scattered away, leaving just the green hues to get through.
It's a lovely application of hard scientific knowledge."
