Hitting the mainpage for the first time, Black Sabbath writes "While
communism has been declared dead and buried (with a few stubborn
exceptions), Karl Marx's diagnosis of [0]capitalism's ills seem quite
bang on the money. Harvard Business Review blogger Umair Haque lists
where Marx may have been right." It's a pretty good read once you get
past the author's three paragraph disclaimer that he is not a communist.
The MIT news also ran a short interview [1]discussing the economic trends
in August this morning.

[0]snydeq writes "Deep End's Paul Venezia [1]waxes befuddled on the
ongoing existence of the fax machine. 'Consider what a fax machine
actually is: a little device with a sheet feeder, a terrible scanning
element, and an ancient modem. Most faxes run at 14,400bps. That's just
over 1KB per second and people are still using faxes to send 52 poorly
scanned pages of some contract to one another. Over analog phone lines.
Sometimes while paying long-distance charges! The mind boggles,' Venezia
writes. 'If something as appallingly stupid as the fax machine can live
on, it makes you wonder how we make progress at all. Old habits die hard.
It just goes to show you: Bad technology generally isn't the problem;
it's the people who persist in using that technology rather than
embracing far superior alternatives.'"

Yahoo. Company CFO Tim Morse will take up the job's responsibilities

over the phone by the chairman of the board. The AllThingsD blog sums up
the situation thus: "[When Bartz replaced Jerry Yang], she presented a
take-no-prisoners image and was touted as someone with a reputation as a
professional manager who could clean up the place. Not so, as it has
turned out. While Bartz has streamlined certain areas and made some
strong management hires, her performance has been decidedly bumpy and
mostly downhill. The share price has settled in at about $12.50 (just
about where it was when Bartz took over), Yahoos recent financial
results have been weak, its key advertising business is struggling, its
attrition rate among engineers and others is startlingly high and its

Debuting on Slashdot, seezer writes with a piece by [0]Rick Falkvinge
about a recently release diplomatic cable. From the article: "Among the
treasure troves of recently released WikiLeaks cables, we find one whose
significance has bypassed Swedish media. In short: every law proposal,
every ordinance, and every governmental report [1]hostile to the net,
youth, and civil liberties here in Sweden in recent years have been
commissioned by the U.S. government and industry interests." This is from
a Pirate Party founder and so might be slightly exaggerated, but there is
certainly evidence in the cable that the U.S. exerted quite a bit of
influence of Swedish copyright law. The U.S. government appears
particularly vexed that the Swedish public doesn't seem to think anything
is wrong with copying protected works, and (not unexpectedly) was quite
concerned that Pirate Party members might actually be elected.

[1]IPO plans, which triggered skepticism about its high valuation and
furthered claims of a new dot-com bubble, [2]have been put on hold amid
regulatory concerns and worries about "[3]market volatility." According
to the WSJ, "When the company filed to go public in early June, it
attracted criticism for its high marketing costs and unprofitable
business. The company was also asked by the Securities and Exchange
Commission to remove an unusual accounting metric, dubbed Adjusted
Consolidated Segment Operating Income, which painted a more robust
picture of its performance. Last week, the SEC also contacted a Groupon
attorney over a different matter, said a person familiar with the
situation: [4]a leaked internal memo from Groupon Chief Executive Andrew
Mason to his staff, in which he touted the company and blasted its
critics. Making public statements about the financial status of a company

present, and future of the popular programming language, calling mobile
the next target for Ruby: 'I'm currently working on an alternative subset
or dialect of Ruby for the small devices. I'm going to make it public
early next year. Of course, mobile computing is the way to go, so that's
one of the reasons I focus on the Ruby dialect working on the smaller

[0]MrSeb writes "Invensas, a subsidiary of chip microelectronics company
Tessera, has discovered a way of [1]stacking multiple DRAM chips on top
of each other. This process, called multi-die face-down packaging, or xFD
for short, massively increases memory density, reduces power consumption,
and should pave the way for faster and more efficient memory chips.
Multi-die face-down packaging is exactly what it sounds like, with
[2]memory dies stacked on top of each other like roofing tiles. Much like
a normal desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs, each of the stacked dies is
wired to each other in series but in this case, the connections are
much shorter, as they only have to run a few micrometers to the chip
below it. This is where all of the power and speed enhancements come
from: shorter interconnects mean less power is needed (and thus less heat
is dissipated) and signals propagate faster."

[0]astroengine writes "Although the idea of "infecting" the Red Planet
with our germs is nothing new, one microbiologist believes [1]the next
Mars rover may have a higher chance of becoming a microbe lifeboat.
Andrew C. Schuerger, of the University of Florida and the Space Life
Sciences Lab at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, believes the
problem could lie in the way NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) will
land on the Red Planet wheels first. Previous Mars rovers have sat atop
a lander platform for at least two Martian days (sols) before venturing
into the regolith; any surviving bacteria attached to their wheels were
therefore killed by the harsh UV light that bathes Mars. As the MSL's
wheels will immediately make contact with the regolith straight after
entry, there might be an increased chance of contaminating Mars with
terrestrial germs. But still, as Schuerger admits, the risks are tiny."

they have [1]successfully demonstrated full-duplex wireless tech that
would [2]allow a doubling of network traffic without the need for more
cell towers. Professor Ahutosh Sabharwal said [3]the innovative
technology requires a minimal amount of new hardware for both mobile
devices and networks. However, it does require new standards, meaning it
might not be available for several years as carriers move to 5G networks,
he added. By allowing a cell phone or other wireless device to transmit
data and receive data on the same frequency, unlike with today's tech,
the new standard could double a network's capacity. Rice has created a
[4]Wireless Open-Access Research Platform (WARP) with open source
software that provides a space for researches from other organizations to
innovate freely and examine full-duplex innovations."

at the state of open source software and an overview of the best open
source software of the year. 'It's easy to find hundreds of other
positive signs of open source domination. If the mere existence of a tar
file filled with code from the nether regions of a beeping device that's
buried deep inside someone's pocket is all you need to feel warm and
fuzzy about "open source," you might conclude that open source
development is the most dominant form in the increasingly dominant
platform of the future,' Wayner writes. 'But anyone who digs a bit deeper
will find it's not so simple. Although the open source label is more and
more ubiquitous, society is still a long way from Richard Stallman's
vision of a world where anyone could reprogram anything at any time.
Patents, copyrights, and corporate intrigue are bigger issues than ever
for the community, and more and more people are finding that the words
"open source" are no guarantee of the freedom to tinker and improve. Some
cynics even suggest that the bright, open future is receding as [2]Linux
and other open source tools grow more dominant.' Included in the writeup
are the [3]best open source applications, [4]best open source desktop and

seven years and has proved popular in commercial as well as open-source

ability to share project dashboards outside the system. Patrick Li's JIRA
