Xest writes "A man in the UK has been [0]jailed for 18 weeks for
'trolling,' and has also been given an order banning him from using
social networking sites for five years. 25-year-old Sean Duffy mocked a
dead teenager who had jumped in front a train by posting offensive
remarks on a page dedicated to her memory, and creating a YouTube parody
of Thomas the Tank with the deceased girl's face in place of Thomas. Is
it about time trolling to this extent saw this kind of punishment, or is
this punishment simply too harsh for someone who perhaps didn't realize
how seriously his actions would be taken by the authorities?" [1]Coverage
from the Guardian explains that Duffy pleaded guilty to "two counts of
sending malicious communications," and added that he must tell police
about any phones he buys that can provide internet access.

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new government law has created an unusually precise list of injury
codes for billing purposes. Currently there are 18,000 standard billing
codes; the new law would [0]expand that list to around 140,000. If you've
been injured at the Opera, walked into a lamppost, pulled something while
playing a trumpet, or [1]have been attacked by a turtle, there's now a
code for that. From the article: "The federal agencies that developed the
systemgenerally known as ICD-10, for International Classification of
Diseases, 10th Revisionsay the codes will provide a more exact and
up-to-date accounting of diagnoses and hospital inpatient procedures,
which could improve payment strategies and care guidelines. "It's for
accuracy of data and quality of care," says Pat Brooks, senior technical
adviser at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services."

[0]Julie188 writes "While the world is distracted with the Window 8
client, Microsoft is simultaneously working on Windows Server 8. At
BUILD, Microsoft [1]unveiled its next-generation server OS under heavy
secrecy to a room full of analysts and product testers. WS8 is radically
different than its predecessors. There's an argument to make that [2]it's
not actually Windows. The code they saw was pre-beta and an obvious
attempt to put an arrow in the heart of former-softie-turned-VMware-CEO
Paul Maritz. Windows 8 Server editions are to be run in Server Core
format (the GUI will be optional). PowerShell has gotten an overhaul and
its command list will exceed 2,300 native commandlets in Windows Server
8. Hyper-V has also been revamped and [3]will become massively scalable
in the number of VMs supported and in the size of each VM." In related
news, it appears that [4]Java now runs on Microsoft's Azure platform.

[0]wooferhound writes with an article in the Orlando Sentinel about
NASA's Deep Space Exploration project. From the article: "After months of
debate, NASA has [1]settled on plans for its next spaceship a space
shuttle hybrid that will [2]fly twice in the next decade and cost $30
billion through 2021, according to senior administration officials and
internal NASA documents. That NASA decided to recycle elements of the
shuttle is not unexpected. Last year, Congress and the White House agreed
NASA should reuse equipment from old programs and the new design which
includes a giant fuel tank and two booster rockets largely reflects
that compromise. The most noticeable change is the plane-like orbiter
will be replaced by an [3]Apollo-like crew capsule atop the tank." The
[4]Space Launch System will be powered by a combination of the [5]Shuttle
main engine for the core launch stage, and the [6]J-2 engine (from the
Saturn V project) for the upper stage. The same solid booster rockets
used for Shuttle missions will be used for at least the initial unmanned
launch in 2017, but NASA will have a design contest to replace them for
the 2021 crewed launch and beyond.

It's interesting that Google took part in abandoning ECMAScript 4, which

NotSanguine sends in a story about William Ludwig, a 65-year-old leukemia
patient who underwent a new, experimental treatment that draws upon two
decades of advances in molecular biology. Quoting: "Doctors removed a
billion of his T-cells a type of white blood cell that fights viruses
and tumors and gave them [0]new genes that would program the cells to
attack his cancer. Then the altered cells were dripped back into Mr.
Ludwigs veins. At first, nothing happened. But after 10 days, hell broke
loose in his hospital room. He began shaking with chills. His temperature
shot up. His blood pressure shot down. He became so ill that doctors
moved him into intensive care and warned that he might die. His family
gathered at the hospital, fearing the worst. A few weeks later, the
fevers were gone. And so was the leukemia. ... In essence, the team is
using gene therapy to accomplish something that researchers have hoped to
do for decades: train a person's own immune system to kill cancer cells."

Joining the ranks of accepted submitters, [0]Zibodiz writes with an
article in PC World about Cisco restructuring. From the article: "Cisco
Systems emerged from 150 days of restructuring on Tuesday ... The
networking company started to streamline its operations and refocus
itself on a few core businesses earlier this year after posting
disappointing financial results. The subsequent restructuring [1]shut
down its Flip consumer camcorder unit and other businesses and
[2]eliminated 12,900 jobs, with almost 23,000 employees moved in the
process. Executives laid out some more details on Tuesday at Cisco's
annual financial analyst conference in San Jose, California. Cisco's five
areas of focus now are its core routing and switching business,
collaboration, data-center virtualization, video, and tying these
elements together in an overall architecture." Zibodiz further writes
"Perhaps the most interesting thing to me is that Cisco had 12,900
employees that were doing things other than 'routing and switching,
collaboration, virtualization, video, and ... architecture.'"

[0]eldavojohn writes "The [1]Metasploit Framework has come a long way and

effortlessly. Metasploit: The Penetration Tester's Guide takes [2]current
[3]documentation further and provides a valuable resource for people who
are interested in security but don't have the time or money to take a
training class on [4]Metasploit. The highlights of the book rest on the
examples provided to the reader as exercises in exploiting several older
versions of operating systems like Windows XP and Ubuntu while at the
same time avoiding triggering antivirus or detection. The only weak point
of this book is that a couple chapters refer the reader to external texts
(on stacks and registers) in order to meet requirements for crafting
exploits. The book also gives the reader a brief warning on ethics as
many of these exploits and techniques would most likely work on many
sites and networks. If you're wondering how seemingly inexperienced
groups like lulzsec constantly claim victims, this would be an excellent
read." Keep reading for the rest of eldavojohn's review.
