action alert! China's record on internet freedom is pathetic at best. But new rules on information gathering by providers and real-name registration is restricting free speech even more. China: Roll Back New Internet Censorship Laws please share it helps!     Dear Annisa, Try googling "Tiananmen Square" in Shanghai and you'll come face to face with China's internet censorship laws, some of the strictest in the world. But apparently, hiding less-than-rosy depictions of the country wasn't enough. As of last month, a new law requires internet, landline and mobile providers to collection information on their users, which has already been used to shut down blogs. The "Decision to Strengthen the Protection of Online Information" as the new set of rules is called requires real-name registration, exposing anyone online -- and especially activists publishing content -- to Chinese authorities and serious risk for whistle-blowing or expressing dissent. It's no secret that the Chinese communist party isn't into the internet and the information revolution it kindled. But we can't continue to tolerate extreme restrictions on free speech -- a basic human right. Stand up for the rights of all Chinese people to say what they think: Tell the government to roll back new internet censorship laws. Thank you for taking action, Emily V.
