Urge the FDA to Make Implants Safe!
Currently, there is a huge loophole in the U.S. medical system that turns patients into test subjects for new medical devices, such as metal hips. Now, the FDA is considering improvements, but the medical device industry is strongly opposed to necessary changes.

Join us and tell the FDA that all high risk implantable devices must go through safety testing before sold and implanted in our bodies!

Hi Annisa,
Happy Easter! Send your Easter eCards today!
DID YOU KNOW?
Preceding Easter Sunday is the 40-day penitential season of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding at midnight on Holy Saturday. Lent is a season of prayer, abstinence, and fasting. This is observed in memory of the 40 days' fast of Christ in the desert. Lent is observed for six weeks and four days by the Western Christian churches that include Saturday and Sunday into the total. In Eastern Orthodox churches Lent is 50 days since they do not count Saturdays or Sundays.

Dear Annisa,

Since its opening in May 2003, Qatar Animal Welfare Society (Q.A.W.S.) has helped hundreds of stray cats and dogs find new homes. But now, it's in danger of being shut down. Without Q.A.W.S., Doha's many animals in need will have nowhere to go to find shelter.

There are already hundreds of stray pets on the streets of Qatar who would only need a little love and support to make great members of the family. But without a place for them to stay in the meantime, these dogs and cats will likely starve or become aggressive toward Qatari locals and visitors alike. Q.A.W.S. doesn't just fill a need when it comes to Qatari cats and dogs -- it helps Qatari people, too.

Care2 member Anouk K. started a petition with us to ask the government to step in to save Q.A.W.S. Anouk writes: "My petition is trying to convince the Qatari government there are a great deal of eyes watching."

Will you join Anouk and the rest of Care2 in signing the petition and standing up for stray animals in Qatar?

Why Buy Raspberry Pi When a Cellphone Will Do?
scorp1us was looking into getting a Raspberry Pi, but ended up needing a case, a display and some way to power it and make it portable. At that point, it seemed that even the most outdated cellphone has far superior features (screen, touch screen, Wifi, 3g/4g camera(s), battery, etc.) in a much better form factor. The only things missing were digital/analog in/out pins, but, again, Slashdotters were there to help.

'Atheist' Merchandise Discriminated Against by USPS
Suspecting that its strongly branded "Atheist" products may be treated differently by more religiously oriented postal regions, Atheist Shoes conducted an experiment. It sent 178 packages to 89 people in different parts of the U.S., each person receiving one package prominently branded as "Atheist" merchandise, and one not. The results confirmed their suspicions.

Best Distro for Linux Newbies?
Ubuntu or Arch or something else? An anonymous reader, who is new to Linux and eager to learn more, asked Slashdotters' advice on which distro is best for a beginner who wants to control and customize as well as suggestions for projects to start with and helpful books and tutorials. As usual, you had plenty to offer.

Massive DDoS Attack Reaches 300 Gbps
The New York Times reports that a dispute between spam-fighting group Spamhaus and blacklisted Dutch website host Cyberbunker has escalated into one of the largest computer attacks--reaching 300 billion bits per second--on the Internet, causing widespread congestion. Dutch authorities and the police said they have made several attempts to enter Cyberbunker headquarters by force but failed to do so.

Leaked Windows Blue Screenshots Show UI Updates
In what has been called "the worst-kept secret in tech," a new pre-public version of Windows Blue (build 9364) has leaked online and it's available for download in many sites around the web. Assuming the reports and screenshots are legit, the most obvious change has to do with the Metro UI.

Modified Prius Gets Up to 180 MPG
Eight years ago, The New York Times reported that despite Toyota and Honda's no-plug-in rule, folks are modifying their hybrid rides and the results includes a very high MPG. One small company even claims that its modded Prius gets up to 180 MPG, and can travel more than 30 miles on battery power.

Leap Motion's Grand Gesture Controller
SlashTV: The Leap Motion product (there's only one for now) allows you to control your computer with gestures. And we're not talking about just jumping around, but "painting" on the screen with your fingers (or chopsticks) with fine enough control that Autodesk and other drawing-oriented software vendors are working to make applications compatible with the controller. See the promising peripheral, which ships soon, in action.

Protect the Rights of the Child
To date, 193 nations have ratified the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), a treaty that lays out a comprehensive set of rights for children, and recognizes the essential role and importance of parents and families in their development. It is the most widely accepted human rights treaty in history... yet the United States has yet to ratify it.

Tell President Obama: it's time to protect the rights of children!

Hi Annisa,
Easter is coming! Time to send your Easter eCards!
DID YOU KNOW?
Prior to A.D. 325, Easter was celebrated on different days of the week, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In that year, the Council of Nicaea was convened by emperor Constantine. They issued the Easter Rule which places Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox (first day of Spring). Therefore, Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25.
